Welcome to Lisbon
From 05 to 09 October, the global tax community is gathering in Lisbon for the 77th Congress of the International Fiscal Association. Almost 60 years after the first IFA Congress held in Portugal, Lisbon again hosts the IFA Congress. There will be discussions and debates on international tax topics of current major interest and importance. We are delighted to be an IFA 2025 Gold Sponsor and will be represented by a large delegation of colleagues from our various tax practice groups. You can find our tax experts at Flick Gocke Schaumburg’s exhibition stand (9 & 10) at the Lisbon Congress Centre.
We are looking forward to five fantastic days of professional discussions, knowledge sharing and valuable networking opportunities!
Let's meet at IFA 2025
FGS Symposium Session @ IFA 2025
Global Dispute Settlement and Prevention Proceedings:
Trends focusing on a German Perspective
Event Date: Tuesday, 7 October 2025, 3:45 pm – 5:00 pm
Location: Terrace, Lisbon Congress Centre (CCL)
This year’s FGS Symposium Session will explore recent trends in international dispute settlement and prevention. Preventing and resolving cross-border tax controversies has become a priority for taxpayers and tax authorities alike. Achieving legal certainty is the overarching goal. But that goes along with a proper application of procedural law, such as the choice of the most suitable instrument and other questions.
Drawing on recent cases, the panelists will highlight technical and procedural challenges affecting cases with German involvement, such as the limited scope of MLI arbitration for double tax treaties, the interplay with EU instruments, the handling of practical questions relating to tax-transparent partnerships for cross-border dispute settlement and prevention proceedings, and insights from interlocking joint audits with APA or MAP.
What are the lessons from recent cases in Germany and abroad? How do joint audits supplement dispute resolution and prevention tools like MAP or APAs? And what are the latest trends shaping international tax cooperation?
Experts from Flick Gocke Schaumburg, Dr. Noemi Strotkemper and Dr. Christian Heider, will start with addressing recent trends and insights from a German perspective. Building on this, European and global experiences and trends will be discussed with our distinguished colleagues: Prof. Dr. René Matteotti (University of Zurich and Tax Partner AG, Switzerland), Sarah Blakelock (AstraZeneca, UK), Mariana Martins Silva (Garrigues, Portugal), and Martin Eckerstorfer (LeitnerLeitner, Austria).
Secure one of the limited seats available and join us for a lively and interactive discussion. Registration is free of charge. We hope to see you there!
